From the President
Emma Inman, APR
As a member of PRSA, you know that we exist to advance the practice of public relations by uniting PR professionals, encouraging continuing education, playing an active role in all matters affecting the practice, and strengthening the relationships of PR professionals with our stakeholders.
But did you ever think about HOW we fulfill our mission? The answer is simple. Committed PRSA leaders have raised their hand and agreed to demonstrate their commitment to the profession by volunteering to serve our PRSA chapter.
Your skills and abilities are needed on a number of PRSA committees including: professional development, public service, membership and awards. I know you enjoy the benefits of PRSA membership. And I know you have ideas on exciting topics we should cover during our professional development workshop, better ways to engage our members, how we can bring the Pinnacle Awards back better than ever and ways to reach out to non-profits to lend our expertise. Won't you raise your hand and become a PRSA leader by joining a committee today? Contact any committee chair or me and we'll be glad to welcome you to the leadership team.
Speaking of leadership, I'd like to commend the leaders of the newly formed Virginia Peninsula PRSA chapter, which will be submitting its petition for charter to PRSA early this year. These folks recognized the difficulty in accessing Hampton Roads chapter events and have stepped up to create a chapter to meet the needs of Peninsula members. Talk about advancing the profession. We're proud that the Virginia Peninsula chapter has spun off. We also recognize the difficulties inherent in starting a chapter from scratch. If there is anything we can do to assist you, our door is always open. We look forward to the opportunity to work with you and would love to explore the possibilities of regional events or activities.
Leadership takes many forms. But no matter what the form, we need leaders who will roll up their sleeves and get actively involved in guiding the chapter. That leader is YOU! |

Ethel the Ethics Evangelist
PRSA places special emphasis on our Code of Ethics. It sets us apart as true public relations professionals, and we should take it very seriously. That is why we make ethics a central part of our society, and our chapter is committed to discussing this topic every year. Not only do PRSA members care about initiating thoughtful strategies and devising clever tactics, but more importantly, we value honesty and integrity in all of our dealings with others.
To help us with our ethical issues, our chapter has enlisted the help of Ethel, the Ethics Evangelist (a.k.a. Gail Kent, Ethics Chair)! In future issues of News & Views, Ethel will bring you ethics articles, including guidelines for decision-making, quizzes and case studies ripped from the headlines. If you have a particular issue you would like to see Ethel tackle, please contact her!

Valentine's Day is quickly approaching. Here are some interesting facts compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Be Mine 2.2 million The number of marriages that take place in the United States annually. That breaks down to more than 6,000 a day.
24.7 pounds Per capita consumption of candy by Americans in 2004. Candy consumption has actually declined over the last few years; in 1997, each American gobbled or savored more than 27 pounds of candy a year.
Valentine's Cards 180 million Number of Valentine's Day cards exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second-most popular greeting-card-giving occasion. (This total excludes packaged kids valentines for classroom exchanges.) (Source: Hallmark research)
