Kenyon
I recently attended a party for a recent graduate of ODU.  It was a wonderful celebration of a major accomplishment, the ending of an era and the beginning of new horizons.  It was truly joyous and as I looked around at the young faces full of promise and enthusiasm, I felt they should enjoy the moment and revel.

For many recent college graduates the future looms large and the world lays out before them.  The possibilities are endless and this is the time for them to apply their knowledge and skills to something substantial--a real paying job.

As many are lamenting over the current state of the economy, it's satisfying to see the youthful encouragement of graduates.  Now, with lectures and textbooks set aside (at least for a while), there comes new challenges and the next steps of forming the future for themselves and the world around them.  What a wonderful place to be and I envy them.

Sure, it's a tough job market and for many graduates they must weigh their options and chose their destination.  Some will have to redefine their life's goals.  It's the same now as it has been in the past.  But now is not the time to worry, it is a time to celebrate and feel a sense of accomplishment.  There will be plenty of time to map out the future and make your mark on the world.

The people I see entering the career of public relations encourage me and I know that there is a bright future for the profession that many of us have devoted a lifetime for.  My advice for these recent grads is to seize the moment, savor it and know the future belongs to you.

Congratulations to the Class of 2009; there's a seat at the table for you.  Come and get it!
National News - PRSA launches hardship program

PRSA members who are unemployed, who have been members for five or more years and are currently up for renewal are eligible to apply for a one-time hardship credit of $110 when renewing their National dues.

Members wishing to take advantage of the hardship plan should notify a Member Services representative at membership@prsa.org or (212) 460-1400. Member Services will send the member a short application which states the terms of the plan, asks the member to indicate whether they are unemployed or temporarily disabled, and asks them to sign it.

Members may pay the adjusted dues by mail, fax or phone. They cannot renew online if they are opting for the hardship plan. The member's renewal will be processed once the application and the renewal have been received at PRSA National.

In response to this program, PRSA Hampton Roads Chapter will offer hardship dues for $50 rather than the regular $75.

Survey: Executives-employees have differing views on the use of social media
May.20, 2009

Sixty percent of executives believe they have a right to know how employees portray themselves and their organizations in online social networks, according to the third annual Deloitte LLP Ethics & Workplace survey released Monday.
Employees disagree, though: 53 percent say their social networking pages are not an employer's concern. This is especially true among younger workers (18-34 year olds), with 63 percent stating employers should not monitor their online activity.

However, employees appear to be aware of the risks presented by using these networks, as 74 percent of the participants responded that they can possibly cause damage to a company's reputation.
While less than 25 percent of executives said that they have formal policies in place on the medium's use, nearly half (49 percent) of employees responded that defined guidelines will not change their online behavior.

"With the explosive growth of online social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, rapidly blurring the lines between professional and private lives, these virtual communities have increased the potential of reputational risk for many organizations and their brands," Sharon Allen, chairman of the board at Deloitte LLP, said in a release.

Richmond Chapter Hosts "War in the Boardroom"
Laura Ries will appear at the Richmond PRSA chapter on May 27 to talk about her new book, War in the Boardroom: Why Left-Brain Management and Right-Brain Marketers Don't See Eye-to-Eye - And What to Do About It. If you have ever felt like management at your organization doesn't quite understand what you're saying, you are not alone. Ries, who co-authored War in the Boardroom with her father, Al Ries, will talk about the differences between left-brain thinkers (a.k.a. management) and right-brain thinkers (a.k.a. PR/marketing professionals)...and how to better understand each other. More info.
