to remember July & Aug. Summer break Sept. 5 Monthly Meeting Oct. 3 Professional Development Workshop Nov. 7 Holiday Social and Annual Meeting Stay tuned for more information about these events! |
It's hard for me to believe that we are already through half a year. It seems like just the other day I assumed my duties as president. We've had some good programs and the board has been working diligently behind the scenes to plan and prepare for 2008. We're looking forward to an exciting and changing year with a revamp of our program format and the development of collaborations with other local associations and organizations. I'll give a complete "State of the Chapter" address at our September monthly meeting. One thing that we felt was a positive for the chapter was to eliminate the July monthly meeting in addition to the August meeting. These months are typically spent with family and vacation plans and we have struggled in the past to have a decent attendance at meetings during these months. We felt it was a good move to extend our summer break for an additional month. However, that doesn't mean that you won't be hearing from us!We'll be coming back from the break with three consecutive months of dynamic programming and we'll be sharing it with you in informational e-blasts throughout the summer months. Have a great summer, stay safe and stay cool! Hampton Roads Next Top Intern a success! We are happy to report that most of the student contestants who participated in the Hampton Roads' Next Top Intern program during April's chapter meeting received interviews and were offered summer or fall intern positions! Here's what one of the Top Intern judges had to say:. I was very impressed with the Hampton Roads Next Top Intern program. It was a great program, and I could definitely tell that the students put a lot of time and effort into presenting a fun, professional, informative program for all attendees. It was definitely a unique way for the students to showcase their poise and talents to a wide variety of possible employers. The Chamber found a great match for a summer intern through the program, and would recommend other businesses to get involved. Joel Pearce Did you miss it? Development Conference: The PRSA Hampton Roads Chapter is in the planning stages of what will be an invigorating and exciting professional development conference and career forum scheduled for October 3, 2007. And the members of the planning committee - Jessica Kraft, Ed Novi, APR, Francis McDonald, APR, and Rosalynne Whitaker-Heck, APR - invite you to be right in the middle of the mix as a conference session presenter. The conference theme is Re-Tooling, Re-Charging and Re-Defining the Public Relations Profession. The conference will include a variety of information sessions that will provide attendees a wealth of ideas and tools in select areas of public relations practice and education such as 2.0 communication, social media, crisis communications, media relations, etc. In addition to the information sessions, we would like the conference to feature a mini-career forum for public relations majors from our local colleges and universities as well as seasoned public relations professionals. Our goal is to bring in representatives from major public relations firms and related organizations to discuss future career opportunities and well as interview members and students for entry-level, mid-level and upper-level positions and internships. Specifically,
we ask you to serve as a presenter for any of the one-hour sessions listed: We are confident that your participation will help make the conference one of the most dynamic and engaging event ever experienced by our chapter. If you need additional information, please contact co-chairs Rosalynne Whitaker-Heck, APR at rosalynne.whitaker-heck@hamptonu.edu or Francisc.mcdonald@hamptonu.edu. The American Red Cross' Power of Two program is a partnership with PRSA that pairs up public relations professionals with local chapters of ARC to provide much needed PR support during disaster and crisis situations. Po2 refers to the time you might dedicate to volunteering -- two hours (writing news releases, for example); two days (handling media at a local disaster); two weeks (providing media relations for a large disaster anywhere in the United States) or twice a year. Volunteers can determine the types and length of volunteerism specific to their schedules and training is provided. With a projected busy hurricane season upon us, the expertise of PRSA is valued and needed. To get involved, contact your local Red Cross: South Hampton
