PRSA HR Offers National Teleseminar on November 29
Building Effective
Crisis Communication Plans
Have you ever wanted to participate in one of the teleseminars offered by PRSA national, but couldn't fathom paying $190 for the session?
As a special benefit to PRSA Hampton Roads Chapter members and guests, our chapter will host this valuable teleseminar at a greatly reduced price.
This intensive short course covers the strategic concepts and thinking required to develop effective crisis communication plans. Learn to identify and reduce crisis-causing risks and exposures; the crisis plan components every plan must have; and how to anticipate and avoid the mistakes that cause response failure. Learn how to involve key people in the planning process to build the crucial management and employee buy-in necessary for ongoing readiness. The public's increasing expectation of accountable ethical and moral behavior by leadership during crisis response will also be discussed.
Effective crisis plans meet five tests: · Sensible, sound thinking and strategy · Getting the first few minutes/hours of a crisis right · Immediately managing media coverage and public concerns · Involving management in planning, response, and readiness · Accommodating foreseeable patterns of mistakes and problems
Wednesday, November 29; 3 - 5 p.m.

Looking
Ahead: January Chapter Meeting
Transforming
Managers Into
Better
Communicators, Even Leaders
Presented
by James E. Lukaszewski, ABC, APR, Fellow PRSA, CCEP
Most
managers above the supervisory level consider themselves
to be good to excellent communicators, but those of us who
are communicators know that one of the weakest areas in
most organizations is communication to employees by managers
and supervisors. Although many programs are available through
different channels to address this weakness, too few genuinely
help supervisors become better communicators.
This program is specifically designed to help ensure that
participants return to their offices armed with proven communication
techniques and strategies they can use to help align all
levels of management, employ better communication techniques,
and become even better leaders. This program will address
six of the most difficult areas managers and supervisors
face daily.
Stay tuned for more details and registration information.
This is a program not to miss!

Exotic food, decorations, and music, along with a robust silent auction, led the evening's festivities. The more than $1,400 raised from the silent auction will be allocated for the PRSSA scholarship fund. Many thanks to Amy Cobb and her committee, and Distinctive Event Rentals for a terrific evening!

From the President
Becky Lawson, APR
It hardly seems that a year has passed since I began serving as chapter president. I'm a bit more tired than I was in the beginning of the year, but my enthusiasm has not wavered. I still have a passion for public relations and hope that you do as well. Looking back on this year, our board has worked tirelessly to manage programs, oversee the budget, identify volunteers and develop new programs and structure for next year. It has required many additional hours than our traditional monthly board meetings. So, I applaud our board members for their tireless dedication to our chapter--THANK YOU! A leader is only as good as the people they serve with and I could not have found it possible to lead our chapter without them.
On target for next year, we have secured speakers and topics that include eMarketing, Virginia Tech Crisis Management, political PR, and Jamestown 2007 Wrap-up. We've also explored new partnerships by making contact with associations with similar or related interests with the hopes of developing joint workshops or cross-over promotion. At this writing, we are working out details for a joint workshop with the local chapter of AIGA, a professional association for design professionals. With our membership comprised of many young professionals, we are going to host quarterly after work get-togethers at local restaurant/bars to offer a very informal networking opportunity. In addition, we are trying out a new venue for some of our meetings--The Murray Center in downtown Norfolk. We held our October meeting at this facility and received rave reviews. Additionally, their food and service fees are much less expensive than at other hotels in our market.
You'll notice that we are not having a meeting every month. We currently have six meetings schedules for '08. We did this intentionally, as membership feedback indicated that attending monthly meeting was just too difficult. We are also going to offer some reduced priced teleseminar programs on key PR issues and topics. These will provide an alternative to a meeting, but still provide meaningful content for those able to participate. In an effort to keep our overhead low, we have also created a development committee to assist with identifying and securing sponsorship for meetings, web banners and ads, newsletter, etc.
One of our primary struggles this year has been financial. As costs increase across the board for meeting space, AV rental and food/beverage service charges we have struggled to break-even at every meeting. With that said, we have increased our meeting fees to $25 for students, $35 for members and $45 for non-members. This will allow us to make a very small profit from each meeting so that we can continue to bring quality speakers to our area on topics of interest. For those of you receiving your statements from national for annual membership dues, you'll notice that our chapter dues have increased from $55 to $75 per year. This is the first increase in chapter dues we've incurred in nearly 10 years. Increasing fees is never an easy decision. The board spent many hours of discussion and budget review. Our goal has, and always will be, to provide value for your membership.
I hope that you are encouraged by the changes we are making for next year. I ask that you consider volunteering on a committee or taking a leadership role within the chapter. We are only as good as our members and we are always in need of fresh ideas. I pass the baton on to our incoming president, Emma Inman, APR, with complete confidence that she will lead you well. |

Leadership Spotlight - Emma Inman, APR
Emma Inman, APR, our incoming chapter president, is no stranger to PRSA HR or the field of public relations. Here's a closer look at Emma:
Full name: Emma April Inman
Hometown: I grew up in a small town south of Buffalo, NY but adopted Virginia Beach as home nine years ago and I just love it. (Who needs snow, anyway!)
Family/Pets: My husband, George and I, live with our Chow/Shepherd, Cheyenne, who we adopted from Virginia Beach Animal Control. Don't look under any of the furniture in my house, or you'll liable to spot dog hair. She's a furball, but we love her. On a more serious note, we lost our only child, George, in 2004 when he was 18. His loss has been tremendously difficult, but through it, I have learned to view the world very differently and am actively engaged in efforts to raise funds for education, research and prevention of suicide.
What brought you to Hampton Roads? My family and I had vacationed here for many years and fell in love with the area. When some corporate changes took place at our jobs in Pennsylvania, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to relocate. I created a plan and set out to find a job here (making contacts through the PRSA chapter!) and landed a job with the City of Virginia Beach.
How long have you been in the PR field? My gray hair should be an indication - 18 years.
Current position: I am manager of Corporate Communications at Sentara Healthcare. I've been with Sentara for two years and am responsible for issues management, crisis communications, media relations, community engagement and internal communications for the region's largest health system. Sentara's a great place to work if you like a challenge - no two days are ever the same.
What do you like to do on a day off? Get dirty. I'm an avid potter, so my ideal day off involves wedging clay, slapping it onto my wheel and throwing bowls or hand building functional and sculptural pieces. If my apron's not covered in clay when I'm finished, it hasn't been any fun! When I'm not doing that, in the summer I love to spend time with my husband on our boat, cruising along the Elizabeth River, Chesapeake Bay or the many other wonderful waterways in Hampton Roads.
What has been your most memorable PR challenge? So many challenges, so little space. One of the most memorable occurred at a hospital I worked for in Pennsylvania. The death of a child made front page news in the New York Times and we were contacted by 60 Minutes. (Your worst nightmare.) We handled it well and I was proud to be part of the team that managed the crisis. Here in Hampton Roads, planning for the John Muhammad trial (the D.C. sniper) in Virginia Beach was certainly exciting. We hosted more than 600 international media representatives, many of whom said they had never experienced a media center run as well as ours. That was tremendous recognition for the execution of a plan put together with very little time and very little resources.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? I have the opportunity every day in everything I do to contribute to Sentara's mission - improving health. Recognizing employees who save lives through our internal publications or working with the media to tell the stories of new medical innovations that Sentara brings to the area is very rewarding.
Who do you most admire? My grandmother. Although she only had an eighth grade education, she was one of the smartest people I know and she never hesitated to share her thoughts and knowledge with those around her. She passed away in May at age 95. She lived with my husband and I for the past ten years, and I miss her terribly, but the things she taught me will stay with me a lifetime.
What is the most valuable feature of being a PRSA HR member? Absolutely the networking. I know that if I am facing a PR challenge that I can't get my mind around, I can pick up the phone and call ten colleagues who will offer advice to help me. It's wonderful knowing that the PR brain trust of Hampton Roads is just a call or email away and they're always willing to share their expertise. |
