Changing Media and what it means to
Public Relations The mainstream media, and most notably newspapers across the country, are feeling the affects of change as fewer people are getting their news and information from newspapers, television and radio. Media giants--the mainstays of fourth estate--are falling victim of the economy and the meteoric rise of online news and entertainment. These truly reliable conduits of public opinion and attitudes are quickly slipping out of the mainstream and creating greater challenges for public relations professionals to inform and influence their target audiences. The impacts have been far-reaching as newspaper, television and radio managers are forced to cut staff and downsize in order streamline their operations and show a profit. The media is evolving in an almost Darwinian survival of the fittest as reporters, news directors, and editors seek ways to compete in an ever quickly changing landscape. On April 8th, the Hampton Roads Chapter is hosting a media panel discussion on the "Changing Landscape of Hampton Roads Media." We have invited three of the top local media leaders to participate in an insightful question and answer session on what's happening to Hampton Roads media and how they see the future. Denis Finley of the Virginian-Pilot, Carol Lichti of Inside Business and Kathy Hostetter of WAVY Channel 10 will engage in this enlightening discussion that will be moderated by Dale Gauding, a former local news reporter who now works in corporate public relations with Sentara. This is one session that I believe every local public relations professional should attend. You'll get a view from the top on how decisions are made and what factors influence media coverage. Get an inside peek of what happens in the hallowed news rooms and what drives management to make changes in order to widen their reach into the communities they serve. I hope to see you there! |
