A message from the President By Mindy Hughes, APR Dear PRSA Colleagues: Over the past few days, I've been thinking a lot about sustainability, but not in the way you might expect. I've been asking myself how we can sustain the excitement and commitment to PRSA Accreditation that was evident at the April 7 chapter meeting while members discussed proposed amendments to our chapter by-laws that would have dropped the Accreditation requirement for president and president-elect. It was a healthy discussion for our chapter to have, and frankly, one that was overdue. During the course of it, two Accredited chapter members pledged their strong support as mentors for anyone who's ready to pursue Accreditation. And three chapter members indicated they were ready to start, joining three others who are already in the process. That's great news, and we look forward to helping them on this journey. And, Accreditation is a journey. The process is not easy, but it's well worth the effort for a public relations practitioner who values excellence. Accreditation is the mark of distinction for public relations professionals and a recognized standard in the industry. PRSA National offers ample resources for people ready to take this career-enhancing step. Locally, President-elect Sid Bridge is planning ways that our chapter can support members who are in the process or who are interested in learning more about it. Is it time for you to start looking into Accreditation? To find out more about it, logon to http://www.prsa.org/Learning/Accreditation/. If you're considering Accreditation, please contact Sid Bridge for more information on how the chapter can help you. You can be assured that the Accredited members of the Hampton Roads PRSA chapter will be behind you 100 percent. Best regards, Mindy

Proposed By-Laws Amendments Update At the April 7 chapter meeting, members who were present voted on proposed amendments to the Hampton Roads Chapter By-Laws that would have removed the requirement for Accreditation for president and president-elect. These proposed changes were defeated. During the course of the discussion, former chapter president Sean Brickell, APR, Fellow PRSA, shared a letter he received from one of his colleagues, Michael L. Herman, APR, S.A.G.E., Fellow PRSA, the immediate past chair of the PRSA College of Fellows and Recipient of the PRSA 2009 Gold Anvil for Lifetime Career Achievement. Michael spoke passionately about the significance of PRSA Accreditation. Please take a few moments to read his letter here. |
