Diversity and the Communications Professional in Hampton Roads
Join PRSA-HR on Wednesday, September 1 as we host a panel discussion on the role of diversity and inclusion in communications strategies. The panel will feature Howard University's Dr. Rochelle Ford, APR, a leading advocate for diversity in communications.
Learn how Hampton Roads' changing demographics make diversity an essential element of any long-term strategy. Whether you're reaching out to your employees, launching a new product, or expanding the depth and breadth of your public affairs and marketing efforts, diversity is an important consideration. Our panel, moderated by PRSA-HR President-elect Sid Bridge, will address these topics and also allow time for questions.
Join us for lunch on September 1 at the Town Center City Club for this event.
Mark your calendars for PRSA Hampton Roads' 2010 Professional Development Conference entitled Evolving Your Media Relations Strategy.
We are planning an enriching, thought-provoking conference this year that will not only help you find new strategies in PR, but also deliver an impactful return on your investment.
Key topics will include:· Pairing Social Media With Traditional Communications Techniques · Pitching for Today's Media Environment · Creating Powerful Digital News Releases · Ensuring Your Business Outcomes Measure Up · How to Reach Audiences Via Mobile Devices, Video and Online Newsrooms
This year's PRSA-HR Professional Development Conference will be held at the exciting Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Friday, October 1. We will send more details soon, but we look forward to seeing you there. Start your weekend with us at the beach!

A message from the President By Mindy Hughes, APR
Dear PRSA Colleagues,
Enjoying your summer? It's off to a great start, with all of the wonderful festivals and fun here in Hampton Roads. But, I'm already looking ahead to fall, and most especially, I'm looking forward to attending PRSA's 2010 International Conference, Oct. 16 - 19, being held in Washington, D.C., this year. This is a bit embarrassing to admit, but in more than 20 years as a PRSA member, I've never had the opportunity to attend an International Conference. But this year is different - this year, I made my reservation early and I'll be making the most of everything the conference offers - top-notch speakers, cutting-edge topics, networking opportunities and of course - a little fun after hours exploring D.C. nightlife. The conference is a serious investment, but one that's well worth every penny. To find out more, be sure to check the link on our chapter website, www.prsahr.org. And take note - you can save $200 off the regular conference fee if you register by August 27. And, please let me know if you're attending the conference. We're planning a special event for members of Mid-Atlantic District chapters that you won't want to miss. Closer to home, you can enjoy two excellent programs planned for our chapter's fall season - the September 1 luncheon featuring noted PRSA diversity advocate Dr. Rochelle Ford, APR, and our annual professional development conference on October 1 - Evolving Your Media Relations Strategy - at the fabulous Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hilton. Mark your calendars now and watch for more details. Stay safe and have fun this summer! Best regards, Mindy

Congratulations to our Anvil Award Winners
The PRSA-HR chapter is honored to have two members receive 2010 Anvil Awards.
Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding's Shipbuilding Television (SB-TV) has won the Bronze Anvil Award from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). PRSA-HR members Jim Roberts and Walter Chawlk work on the communications team that created SB-TV, with chapter member Bryan Moore serving as anchor and producer of the program. PRSA's Bronze Anvil Awards annually recognize outstanding public relations tactics that contribute to the success of an overall program or campaign. The newscast style production of SB-TV includes news stories about Shipbuilding milestones and interviews with the shipbuilders who make these milestones possible. Congratulations to Tanya Madison for her work on two Silver Anvil Award winning campaigns. While working with Ketchum PR, Tanya led two market introduction PR campaigns for Chase Card Services, the credit card division of JP Morgan Chase, which both received Silver Anvil Awards. MVP Update
Earlier this spring, the PRSA public service committee announced news of the Mentorship Volunteer Program (MVP) - a way to match public relations professionals who wish to volunteer their time with regional non-profit organizations that have an identified PR need. Our committee partnered with VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads in developing the program application and criteria-and getting the word out to the region's non-profit community. The response was well-received, and we had the difficult task of narrowing the selections to five organizations.
Recipients of this year's MVP include:
Chesapeake Care Inc. - This non-profit organization provides health care for low income, uninsured residents of Chesapeake and dental care to low income, uninsured residents throughout Hampton Roads. PRSA Members Sally Hartman and Misti Frost will assist this group in the development of a public relations plan.
Consortium for Infant and Child Health (CINCH) - A non-profit affiliate of Eastern Virginia Medical School, CINCH develops and implements regional initiatives to improve children's health, with a focus on chronic disease prevention. PRSA members Sharon Hoggard and Alexis Harris will work with this group in the development of a marketing plan. H.E.R. Shelter - Help and Emergency Response, Inc., or H.E.R., is dedicated to providing safe emergency housing for victims of domestic violence. PRSA members Becky Lawson and Jennifer Gwaltney will lend a hand to this group in the development of a public relations plan. Judeo-Christian Outreach Center, Inc. - Established in 1986, this organization serves the homeless population in Hampton Roads by providing meals, counsel and emergency shelter. PRSA member Elizabeth Evans will collaborate with their staff in developing a public relations plan. Mercy Medical Airlift - This organization provides charitable, long-distance air transportation for those with medical needs. PRSA Member Monica Miller Rodgers will be advising on the development of social media practices.
Recipients have been notified, and PRSA volunteers have already set to task-meeting with their respective non-profits, touring their facilities, discussing their needs, gathering resource and research materials and beginning work on the public relations projects (to be completed by Dec. 15, 2010).
Please keep an eye on "News & Views" over the next few months for updates of these projects and profiles of some of the program recipients.

Dress for Success Clothing Drive
PRSA-HR would like to give back to the community by holding a business attire clothing collection at the September chapter meeting. We hope to partner with Dress for Success or another charitable organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged women who want to re-enter the workforce. September is a great time; it's right about then that we start to switch over to our fall wardrobes. While we work out the details, keep this in the back of your mind and we'll keep you posted over the summer. |
