Diversity and the Communications Professional in Hampton Roads

Join PRSA-HR on Wednesday, September 1 as we host a panel discussion on the role of diversity and inclusion in communications strategies. The panel will feature Howard University's Dr. Rochelle Ford, APR, a leading advocate for diversity in communications.

Learn how Hampton Roads' changing demographics make diversity an essential element of any long-term strategy. Whether you're reaching out to your employees, launching a new product, or expanding the depth and breadth of your public affairs and marketing efforts, diversity is an important consideration. Our panel, moderated by PRSA-HR President-elect Sid Bridge, will address these topics and also allow time for questions.

PRSA-HR APR Candidate Academy In Full Swing

The PRSA-HR APR Candidate Academy kicked off Thursday, July 15.  Fourteen eager APR hopefuls met at the JCC for the first of eight classes developed by the academy committee to help prepare chapter members interested in APR accreditation.  Chapter president Mindy Hughes and fellow board member Becky Lawson led the candidates through the first week's curriculum, which included a course outline and reference material review, tips for suggested study habits and a review of PR history.  The class will meet each Thursday through September 2.

The commitment to excellence in the PR field has been clearly demonstrated by the collective effort of the chapter.  Many thanks to the board and chapter members who have volunteered to lead one or more of the academy sessions:  Mindy Hughes, APR; Becky Lawson, APR; Harry Kenyon, APR; Lindy Sweeney, APR; Emma Inman, APR; Michelle Rogerson, APR; Kevin Gaydosh, APR; Sean Brickell, APR; and Sid Bridge, APR.  An extra thanks to Sid Bridge for securing the meeting space at a very affordable cost and to all those who helped get the academy off the ground.

Best of luck to all the APR candidates. The chapter looks forward to celebrating your successes!

Summer Fun

How did you spend your summer vacation? We're looking for photos of chapter members having fun away from work. Please email your submissions to Jennifer Cauldwell with a brief description of where you are and what's happening, and we'll publish them in an upcoming newsletter.

mindy-ziplineHere's a sample - this is Chapter President Mindy Hughes on a zip line canopy tour at Nantahala Gorge in North Carolina's Great Smoky Mountains in May. Great fun, and for Mindy, a way of overcoming her fear of heights.
Public Service Project - Helping Medically Indigent

Sentara Healthcare is partnering with the FREE Foundation www.free-foundation.org  to assemble a local coalition to collect, refurbish, sterilize and distribute assistive devices - such as walkers, crutches, canes and wheelchairs for the medically indigent.

The FREE Foundation is a Roanoke-based non-profit organization, with several chapters in western Virginia and a new chapter in Richmond.

Besides setting up a volunteer board and locating donated space to house and refurbish the devices, the FREE Foundation also needs assistance with publicity - an initial awareness campaign through the news media, along with collateral materials to distribute through funeral homes, church newsletters and other channels to make people aware of the organization and solicit donations of gently-used items.

To find out more or volunteer to help with this awareness campaign, contact Dale Gauding dtgaudin@sentara.com at Sentara, 757-455-7118,
