The Hampton Roads Virginia Chapter of PRSA serves public relations professionals in the greater Hampton Roads region with professional development programs, resources and services. | |
Earning APR status is a goal of many seasoned public relations practitioners. This committee helps practitioners prepare for PRSA's accreditation exam and administers the exam. "The designation "Accredited in Public Relations" (APR) indicates to both clients and colleagues that an individual has a high level of experience and competence, as well as a serious commitment to the profession. More and more employers are seeking accredited candidates for senior and management-level positions." Go here For more information on Accreditation in Public Relations.

Attracting new members and retaining those we already have are the main goals of this committee. It sends out membership information, processes completed PRSA applications, plans events such as new-member orientations and social gatherings, and contacts members whose memberships are about to lapse. All members can assist this committee by inviting potential members to meetings and passing along information about chapter activities to them.
The monthly newsletter keeps members informed about chapter activities. It is published electronically on the web site in time to remind members to make reservations for the next meeting, and members are notified by email when a new issue has been published. To keep up with the active Hampton Roads chapter, get in the habit of reading the newsletter as soon as it's published.
This committee, usually headed by the immediate past president, oversees upcoming nominations for chapter officers and board members and conducts elections.
The advisor provides a link between the Hampton Roads PRSA chapter and the Public Relations Student Society of America's Norfolk State University chapter, which is open to students from all area colleges and universities. PRSA tries to nurture practitioners, starting at the college level.
The Program Committee secures interesting and informative guest speakers and panel presenters for monthly meetings, provides information on upcoming programs to the webmaster and newsletter editor, and sends out broadcast email to members announcing each meeting and its topic. Participants come from our area as well as other parts of the country. They represent the diversity of public relations from the corporate world to the non-profit sector. The committee tries to make sure speakers' topics are varied throughout the year and appeal to as wide an audience as possible.
Who could better communicate what PRSA is all about than members of our chapter? This is the function of this committee. Members distribute news releases about monthly meetings, special events and new officers to local media. When the speaker is someone of special note, such as the national PRSA president, the committee follows up with phone calls seeking more coverage. The committee also is responsible for monitoring references to public relations in local media and, if necessary, correcting erroneous information.
This committee employs the expertise of chapter members to help charitable organizations in Hampton Roads.
The Professional Development Committee keeps members up-to-date on new trends, developments and activities in public relations. The committee usually sponsors a fall workshop for mid- to senior level public relations practitioners. Volunteers are always needed to help plan and put on the workshop.
This committee plans and coordinates events that promote networking among members and recruit new members.
